Top 10 Deceptively Dangerous Dog Breeds

In a previous list, I highlighted ten breeds of dog that have become subject to bans throughout the world for their immensity and aggression. The fact is, big dogs often get a bum rap. Many little dogs bite as much, if not more frequently than their larger brethren. Because of their smaller size, the bites aren’t serious and rarely require medical attention, which skews the statistics unfairly. Below is a list of ten breeds that, while small or not otherwise overtly intimidating, are frequently underestimated.

1.Shar Pei

Once among the rarest dogs on the planet, the pudgy, wrinkly Shar Pei has been a resident of China for over two thousand years. There is no clear link between them, but it is likely that the Shar Pei and the Chow Chow have a common ancestor; both are extremely antiquated breeds and sport the distinctive purple tongue.

2.Pekingese

Unlike most of the breeds on this list, the Pekingese has a royal pedigree. Another ancient breed, for many years only denizens of the Chinese Imperial Palace could keep them. They were not imported out of theirnative country until 1860, when British and French troops invaded during the Second Opium War and took some home.

3.Jack Russell Terrier

Best remembered as Frasier Crane’s pet Moose, or the eponymous Wishbone from the children’s book and television series, the Jack Russell is foremost a working terrier.

4.Dachshund

Dachshund means ‘badger dog’ in German, and any canine bred for the purpose of dealing with such a beast is no joke. A badger is a fierce enemy, pound for pound one of the most dangerous creatures on earth; the dachshund had to match it in intensity to have any chance of surviving an encounter.

5.Dalmatian

When the animated film 101 Dalmatians hit theaters in 1961 and its live action remake dropped in 1996, the Dalmatian experienced a heretofore unheralded jump in popularity. Unfortunately, many parents buying the dogs had no idea what they were getting themselves into. A medium sized dog which can reach 70lbs at its upper spectrum, the Dalmatian was bred in Yugoslavia to accompany and guard carriages.

6.Cocker Spaniels

With their floppy ears, doe eyes, and Disney pedigree, it is hard to imagine a dog less intimidating than a Cocker Spaniel. Unfortunately, this is an extremely sensitive breed, often bordering on outright neurotic. Socialization is integral for Cockers, but even the best training cannot overcome the genetic rage syndrome that they are known for.

7.Chow Chow

The Chow is one of the most primitive dog breeds on earth. Although it has a cuddly, bear or leonine appearance, it is naturally very aggressive and unpredictable. Deep-set sunken eyes lend the Chow a very limited peripheral vision, making it easy to startle and annoy the dog unintentionally.

8.Chihuahua

The smallest of all dog breeds, the Chihuahua seems to maintain an urge to overcompensate for its size. Under six pounds at maturity, these quivering balls of nerves are especially unsuitable for homes with children.

9.Bull Terrier

The Bull Terrier’s comical, egg-shaped head and its appearances as Spuds MacKenzie and the Target mascot have done much to paint this breed in a false light. In reality, the Bull Terrier’s history is similar to that of the Pit Bull, used in bloody baiting sports.

10.Beagle

Charlie Brown’s pet Snoopy is the world’s most famous beagle, a plucky hunting breed of small to medium size. Like a lot of the other dogs on this list, its recent working heritage has instilled in it a sometimes unmanageable drive.

Startling footage fishing blue kingfisher. Incredibly rare footage managed to photograph from Thailand Philphat Suwanmon. He took off his fishing blue kingfisher. For about two years he was trying to track down the hunting of birds and he was lucky. At one of the marshes, he found a pair of kingfishers, male and female.

4.Crocodiles

Studying crocodiles in the wild, naturalists repeatedly observed a weird phenomenon. First of all, they noticed crocodiles getting into vicious territory battles. This, in itself, wasn’t phenomenal: Crocodiles are mean, huge predators whose bodies are like two-thirds weaponized. What was interesting to researchers is that, after getting torn up in a fight, crocodiles would waddle back into the bacteria-infested swamp.

Albinism is a genetic defect whereby the melanin production is so little that it produces white pigmentation in the skin, hair, and eyes—a development which results in what scientists like to call “animal mutants.” But not all white animals are albino, of course. An animal can be white because all of its pigment-producing cells are white—rather than merely the melanin ones. The true characteristic of an albino is its pink or red eyes, which appear so due to the capillaries showing through. Here are ten interesting cases of mutation or albinism in animals.

1.Gorilla

The gently-named Snowflake was unique to the gorilla world. Snowflake was the only known albino gorilla ever seen, and spent his time at the Barcelona Zoo in Spain. He lived a long life, eventually succumbing to an unusual form of skin cancer. Thousands flocked to the zoo to see him in his last months, where he’d become a phenomenon and obviously one of the main attractions. He fathered twenty-two offspring, seeing only six make it to adulthood—and not one of them shared his amazing skin tone.

2.Turtle

Question: When is a green turtle white? Answer: When it’s Minty, the White Green Turtle. Minty was housed at Reef HQ in Townsville, Australia. His short life came to an end after only a year in captivity, when he was found at the bottom of his tank. To this day his death remains a mystery. Minty was a leucistic animal and not a strict albino. Rest in peace, Minty.

3.Tiger

Siegfried and Roy knew they had hit white gold when they decided to include white tigers in their magic acts in Vegas. That is, at least until one of the big cats got really fed up and announced “Hey! Wild animal here!” White tigers were then replaced with white hospital walls for Roy. White tigers are not true albinos, though. This is indicated by the black stripes; but even the ones with lighter colored stripes are examples of offspring from parents with a recessive gene, much the same as the lions we mentioned earlier.

4.Camel

This albino camel is incredibly rare. At one time thought to be one of only four in the entire world, Ula was born to a normally pigmented mother at the Jindera stud farm in New South Wales, Australia. Newborn camels are often white, but generally they change to a brown colour as they grow up.

5.Peacock

Surely, the peacock is one of the most spectacular birds you’ll see—and this is especially so when that bird happens to be white. This animal is not albino, and is in fact a variety of the Indian Blue. It’s the kind of thing you’d expect to see at Kim Kardashian’s wedding.

6.Lion

In 2012, the Yalta Zoo in the Ukraine took ownership of not one white lion cub, but five! Three of them were born in a safari park, and the other two at another, smaller zoo in the same city of Yalta. White lions are not classed as albinos as their reduced pigmentation is caused by a recessive gene seen in both parents known as the color inhibitor gene. A very rare occurrence all the same, and even the more amazing considering the number of these cubs born at the same time in the same region.

7.Hedgehog

It’s straight out of a Disney movie. Orphaned, alone, weighing only three hundred grams, suffering from a lung complaint, near death and in desperate need of a helping hand we have: Snowball, the Albino Hedgehog. Snowball was rescued and restored to fitness at the famous Tiggywinkles hedgehog sanctuary in Buckinghamshire, England. All this happened just around Christmas. Why has no one made a Disney film about this yet?

8.Squirrel

A garden in West Lothian, Scotland, became a regular feeding ground for Arthur, the Grey “albino” Squirrel. He appeared one winter, and bearing in mind the snowfall attributed annually to this area of Scotland, it’s a wonder he was spotted at all.

9.Crocs and Alligators

In 2012, scientists carrying out a census of the local salt water crocodile population at the Bhitarkanika National Park in Odisha, India, noticed several examples of albinism in the murky waters. A homage to the hunting skills of these animals is that they were able to thrive even though they were a stunning white in color. The uber-sexy sounding White Diamond is an albino alligator thought to have been the only example of its kind in Europe. He was exhibited as part of a traveling show called “Land der Reptilien.” But not all white alligators are albino. An alligator called White Fog was was a leucistic alligator. Leucistic animals lack the color normally associated with their species, but are not true albinos.

10.Giraffe

Okay, so the jury seems to be out on whether an albino giraffe exists or not. Some say that only white animals have been seen, and no true albinos. Apparently a stuffed one is displayed in “Ripley’s Believe it or Not”. I’ve added this animal to the list as it’s such a beautiful creature and deserves to be shared.

We want to share our observation that over the past 2-3 years, the marmoset, Bali has become much angrier and more aggressive. We were already in Bali 2 years ago, visited the Monkey Park in Ubud.
