How to Find a Missing Dog or Cat
My wife and I have a German shepherd, a Siberian husky, and two cats. The German shepherd was fostered by us from the shelter one day prior to execution. We love animals and help out as much as we can. We have fostered several dogs in the past and found them great homes. For us, the problem with fostering dogs is that sometimes they get attached (and so do we), and then it’s difficult to pass them to the new owner. That’s how the German shepherd stayed in our lives.
When we do find stray dogs, we take them in. We call the local shelters and the local humane society. We also call the police department and let them know we found a dog. Depending on your police department, they might not like that, but some police departments will make a note of it. We will then post some signs up around the neighborhood and wait. We usually wait about 10 days to see if the owner will contact us. If we don’t get a call, we will take the dog to a vet for a check-up and then we’ll start looking for a new home for the dog. Craigslist is usually a great place to start finding a new owner.
Recently, my wife found a cute little Chihuahua walking in the middle of the street in the evening. She was able to pick him up and she brought him home. Unfortunately he had no collar, but judging by his health and behavior, he was an inside dog. So we called the shelters and humane society and put up some posters around the neighborhood. Two days had gone by and no phone calls. We decided to go buy him a proper collar and leash for the time that he is with us. My wife took him to Petco to try on some collars. Somehow he got loose in Petco and ran straight out the door. My wife couldn’t catch him so she called me.
Right away I called the Police, just in case someone else called them to report the dog. I left my number with them and a description. I called 3 local shelters and left my number and description with all of them. I called about 6 local vets and animal hospitals and left my number and description. I called the humane society and animal control and left my number and description of the dog. This was all done within 15 minutes since my wife called me. Then, my wife and I spent the next 6 hours driving around and looking for the dog. We questioned everyone we thought might have a lead (local homeless, outside workers, and so on). Every 1-2 hours I’d call every location previously mentioned to see if anything turned up.
The next day we canvassed the area again and called every contact mentioned 3 times. We also visited all the local shelters and posted ads in the penny saver, craigslist, and put posters around the neighborhood. We kept calling everywhere for about a week. And for about 30 days after we lost the dog, we visited all our local shelters and humane society at least once every 3 days. The 33rd day the Chihuahua showed up at the humane society and we were able to pull him out. We spent some time with him and then found him a new permanent owner. I’ve often helped out friends and neighbors with similar circumstances with much faster success.
The reason I’m writing this article is because a few months ago I was walking my dog and I saw a man in his early twenties hanging flyers about his lost golden retriever. So I talked to him and he told me that the dog was lost about 2 weeks ago. He seemed to really care about the dog but he just didn’t know what to do. When I asked him if he called or visited the shelters or humane society… he said “no.” He didn’t think of visiting them. Really??? So I decided to write an article…

Common Behaviors Of Cats And What They Mean
How long have you owned a cat? Has it been for a day, a month, or a year? Even if it were only days or decades, perhaps you have noticed a cat’s behavior. Cats have their own strange acts. Several pet owners find it baffling when they see their cat acting in a different way. The problem is some people cannot understand their cat’s actions and this, later on, results to problems in keeping their pet healthy and happy. Though a cat’s actions can be a mystery at times, there are methods in which you can unravel the mysteries of common feline acts.
Occassionally, your cat may push a person or objects like furniture and equipment. The cat will, then, stroke its head on the person or object. This behavior is perhaps more obvious if you have a person who owns other animals or a person who is allergic to cats. The cat pushes and rubs so that it can apply a hint of saliva on the person or object. As soon as it does this, that means that person or stuff is marked as its property. This kind of cat behavior can be annoying for some people. However, for the kitty, it sees the person as somebody peculiar and extraordinary so it brushes its fur against the newcomers to establish it as part of its territory.
Marking a person new to your home with its saliva is advantageous for the cat. In this world, however, there are those with pet peeves and those allergic to cats. They will try to get rid of the saliva because it upsets them. If they succeed, they will rid themselves with the cat’s scent. But then, the cat will simply push, rub and lick the guest once more if it cannot identify this individual as its possession. This will quite pose as a problem for the person with allergies or with pet peeves. However, you have to explain to the guest what the cat is trying to accomplish and that this is some sort of welcoming for the guest by the feline. Ask the individual to allow the cat to rub itself on the person. Once the cat does its concern, it will leave your guest alone eventually.
Hunting is a basic for cats. Have you seen your cat do strange movements and create strange sounds while peeking out the window? Do not be shocked. This is just your cat on its toes ready to hunt. If your cat sees a cat or some movement, it will readily be on its paws. Again, do not be alarmed because it is usual for cats.
There are people who think it baffling why cats pounce at objects. Cats love pouncing. This should be expected because for them pouncing is a form of playing. If you see your cat moving like this, do not prevent it from doing so. Otherwise, you may have quite a problem later on. You and your cat may finish up with trouble breaking a lot of stuff in the house. One way to handle how your kitty plays is to purchase toys that it could pounce on. Sometimes a yarn or a string is sufficient for it to play with. Have the yarn or string roll on the floor so that your cat can run after and pounce on it.
You will manage your cat better if you know how to discern your kitty’s body language. Giving food and arranging litter are not the only things you can do for your cat. Though cats cannot talk, if you pay attention to your pet’s activities, you will get to know what it wants to say.

Tips For Bathing Your Cat
Cats do not by and large require bathing because their mothers teach them how to wash themselves when they are kittens. Furthermore, cats have a valid reputation for not liking water too much. However, there might be times when you feel the necessity for bathing your cat.
For example, your cat may be old or sick, have been in a bad fight or become infested with fleas. If these times occur, you will be glad of some tips for bathing your cat, because they can get quite nasty about it, inflicting serious scratches that could become infected.
This first thing to do is gather everything you require in advance, because you will probably have to hold your cat down. So, you will want the shampoo, a flannel and a towel nearby.
If you know that your cat is going to become difficult, bathe it in a bowl either in the garden shed or in the bathroom, where flying water will not cause much of a difficulty.
Otherwise, you could bathe your cat in a bowl on the lawn, but an confined space may help your cat feel less threatened and it will be easier to capture it in an confined space if it escapes your grasp.
If your cat really detests bathing and you have trouble holding it, place it in a pillow case with only its head sticking out. You can use a cat collar to hold the pillow case in position.
If you use a pillow case, wash your cat through the pillow case as you would a delicate, costly woollen sweater. Use an old collar, because otherwise you might wash out the pesticide that is impregnated in it.
If your cat’s hair is matted or clotted with blood, you can better remove the clots and cut away the hair with the cat on your lap before you begin bathing it.
When preparing the bowl, put a non-slip mat or towel in the bottom and only half fill it with luke warm water. The shampoo should be mild. In fact, you ought to bathe your cat as you would a child who does not like getting soap in its eyes.
Lower your cat smoothly but fairly quickly into the water and talk to it reassuringly all the time. It will almost certainly hate what you are doing to it, although some breeds are fairly happy to be in water. Yours probably will hot be though and it will get more than a little scared, so carry on talking to it.
Work quickly and do what you can. It is better to get most of the bathing done the first time round and have to come for a second go later than to actually stress your cat out with a long session and who knows, it may become used to it after repeated sessions, if they do not last too long.
After you are through, wrap the cat in a towel and be nice to it. If it is in a pillow case, wrap the towel around the pillow case and take it off under the towel. When your cat is fairly dry, you can let it go if it wants, because it will dry itself off anyway.
